Description
El Tambor – Le Piantagioni del Caffè
Hailing from Finca El Tambor in El Durazno, Palencia, Guatemala, this single-estate specialty coffee is cultivated at high altitudes between 1,676 and 1,860 meters above sea level. Owned and lovingly restored since 2001 by 5th-generation farmer Víctor Calderón, the estate had previously faced neglect and partial use for mining during the 1990s, but now thrives once more under his stewardship.
Victor has implemented environmentally friendly and socially conscious practices at El Tambor. Among these, he uses alkaline clay (left over from the land’s mining past) as a natural defense against coffee leaf rust—minimizing chemical use and safeguarding both crop and community. All farm employees live on the estate and cultivate 10% of the land for their own food, while nearly half remains forested to preserve biodiversity.
